R.I.P. Artie Shaw

Star Bandleader Artie Shaw Dies at 94 A volatile and superbly intelligent man, Shaw hated the loss of privacy that stardom brought, had little use for signing autographs and once caused an uproar by calling jitterbugging fans "morons." He later said he was just referring to the rowdy ones...

He's made some pretty good live recordings also. Summer in the City is one.

I will also second Blaze of Glory.

New U2 (Redux)

Martin mentioned this in the "best of " thread, and since the original thread is lost to the ether, and since I just bought this, thought I'd re-introduce. I am also hoping it grows on me, although there's not much actually wrong with it. It declines toward the end, and Yahweh (Yeah! Way!)...

May I add my compliments and salutations and hip hip hooray and all that to Dr. S.

"Wha' happened?!"

Whatever it was, I'm sure I'm busted, once again, back down under 100 posts.

Luxembourg no. 2! Wow. Well, I was being a little obtuse, Otis. I think I would put Clubland, Watch Your Step, and Lovers Walk ahead of it. But I have never understood why people are so dismissive of Luxembourg. It's not a masterpiece or anything but I've always thought it was pretty fun. Ditto for...

Richard, I'll second the Fiery Furnaces, although I haven't heard Blueberry Boat. Gallowsbird's Bark is a 2004 purchase for me and one of the best ones. With the caveat that if I'm not in the mood for it, it's especially irritating, and if I am, it's especially fun.

Someone Like You, Van Morrison: Van The Man's Have I Told You Lately is one of the most nakedly honest love songs ever written. So he decided to make it again! Unfortunately, it turned out to be this boring photo negative. Plus, they named an Ashley Judd movie after it, never a good sign. Som...

If I recall, Elvis was particularly taken with Please, and considered covering it.

It's not my favorite, but it still sometimes occurs to me that I'm in the mood for it. I agree that the songs live are compelling.

I always liked Romeo's Seance on JL. Nobody ever seems to mention it.

Good call on Toledo; pretty much the only track from PFM that I play.

And I'll second Heathen Town.

And I kind of like King of Confidence.

The first Morrison record I ever heard was Poetic Champions Compose , and it's still my favorite. I think "where you came in" matters a lot with artists like Van, Elvis and Waits. Others: No Guru St. Domic's Preview Wavelength I think he's gotten kind of boring and I stopped picking up the...

I only snipped the paragraph in the interests of space, and commented on (what I took to be) the crux of the issue you presented therein. But that's a red herring in any case. Dan, I honestly don't know what this point is that you say continues to be made here, except that you don't really like Kerr...

Guh. Well, I'll admit that is a pretty lame quote. Guess I'll vote for Bush after all. If he had a good reason for voting no -- because he thought a rescinded tax cut should have paid for part of it -- he should have just stuck to it, especially because it's too difficult to explain some nuance of t...

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind probably deserves its own thread. I loved Kaufman's other movies, but in this one I think his cleverness serves his characters' humanity more than in the others, I think. It's an affecting, wonderful movie.
