Taz, I'm reviving this old thread to find out if you purchased Painted From Memory and what you thought of it. When I got it on its release in 1998, I disliked it. The arrangements and background singers were so different from what I was used to in an Elvis Costello album that I avoided listening to...

Jackson Doofster, thanks for the quiz, it was great fun. To formulate such a difficult set of questions you had to know a great deal of Elvis Costello information so you are the real winner, getting 31 out of 31! Perhaps I took the contest too seriously. I have asked my associates to untie the Foyle...

Alas, you're too late, that song is sung out. What a memorable night it was. She looked so beautiful and her voice is that of an angel.

Well, thanks for stopping by all the same! 8)

Bambooneedle, your verse reminds me of the lines from a popular song: "Girl, you must be a football coach the way you've got me playing the field." Mug, thank you kindly, it's good to see you posting too. If you "retire the jersey" of that quip you will have to get a New Jersey. ...

LJ, some brief comments on your wonderful poems: "Beautiful Lie." I can imagine Elvis Costello putting this to music, such lines as "A moral suspension for a night filled with bliss/ You're first in the mirror and first on your list" would come naturally to him. Poem inspired by ...

(Well put, sulkygirl.)

I love the alliteration in the line about "lipstick and laughter," the sharp way that line ends, and the wistful mood of the whole. There is a sense of devoured days recalled in reverie.

It is a beautiful poem, LJ.

Accidents is in a class by itself, brilliant complex lyrics and a timeless melody. I prefer the piano based version culled from the Hollywood High shows of yesteryear found on the Armed Forces reissue, because one can hear every golden word. Every Day I Write the Book is clear second, I have such a ...

Sweet Pear is to me a complete love song, and entirely unique. He tells us much about the woman by indirection. She is challenging ("Those who say they love you would never dare"), vulnerable ("I'll watch out for you, I'll always be there"), passionate ("There's a void witho...
