September the 15th is a date emblazoned on my brain. I cannot think of anything colder and sterile than downloading music. I like something tangible to hold and to cherish. I like to feel the plastic jewel case in my hand and to read the sleeve notes. I love that rush of slipping it into the player...

Q

I hate wanky reviews like this. You know what I mean ?? Those "Elvis Costello albums used to be important but they're not anymore" type reviews. Q used to be a magazine that really supported Costello, up until ATUB in 1996. Even Kojak Variety warrented an interview feature, and all that y...

Sour Milk Cow~ Says Elvis: He asks me if I think people will listen to the record for what it is, rather than as a piece of potted biography. Well, I say, it's inevitable that people will be interested in the story behind it. "I hope it doesn't crowd anybody," he says. "My intention ...

Okay, if my lovely pal Pip says she hears it that way, I believe her. HOWEVER, I have listened to this song at least a hundred times (honest!) and I just made my friend listen to it with me, and we hear it clearly, and the lyric is sung precisely as the John E site lists it, and as I wrote above. I...

Yeah, it raises a few for me-- I don't quite buy that YOU LEFT ME IN THE DARK is about bereavement; it just doesn't fit, if you listen with that in mind. It also makes no sense as the start of this song-cycle. Yeah, I agree. I can't quite hear it as bereavement, either. "Then I awoke to my dis...

[quote="so lacklustre"]SMC has given a pretty good summary above. My favourote for pure listening pleasure is still Armed Forces. Yeah, that is a great one. Surprising, really, because when I look at the track listing it doesn't seem like there's much to get excited about, and AF isn't eve...

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coffee-table-less person: not sure who you are, but you either have a different version or are on some very potent drugs. Not worth pursuing further; just silly how obvious this is. Selfmade mug, you are the one who is wrong. I'll emphasize that: WRONG, WRONG, WRONG -- LISTEN to the ALBUM VERSION o...

Re: What are the best reissues?

Hey Dudes.. I noticed that there are a lot of new CD's with extra bonus tracks....it is all so confusing, and I don't want to buy a CD I already own (they're expensive as hell in DK) unless it really adds a lot of value! What are the must haves?????? Bad news, I'm afraid. Most of these new reissues...

Re: NORTH is obviously intended to be autobiographical!

it's the most "personal" record that EC has ever made because it was composed and performed at the piano and in his speaking register. I would say that's why the music and sound of the album feels really initimate and personal, but that's not what makes it his most personal album, IMHO. I...

NORTH is obviously intended to be autobiographical!

I think it's wrong to assume that North is intended to be autobiographical in any way. It may have been inspired by the recent events in his life, but to look at it as his attempt to tell his side of the "story" is a mistake. While he has said that the lyrics on this album are more "...

Those who are claiming that NORTH is not autobiographical-- have you HEARD the album? :) I would say exhibit A would be the song "NORTH" which is all about moving to Canada. I know, I know, maybe Costello was struck with the inspiration to create a fictional character who is moving to Cana...

Have you SEEN how long those journal entries were?

I went back to the "Journal" section of the official EC site, and I was flabbergasted at how long those journal entries were! I copied them to a word file to save them (after all, once they get "deleted" from the website, like the "Ask Elvis" section was, they are gone ...

NORTH indeed

I have to say, if this is true, it kind of makes NORTH a slightly sour thing. After all, it sort of paints a picture of EC as this heartbroken man who gets "left" in the dark, and "someone" takes his words away, and he's stopped dreaming, and fallen and all that. And then he meet...

I think he WILL

A few months ago, the elviscostello.com site announced it would soon be unveiling a re-design, presumably to gear it more towards the new album. I hope there will be a return of "Ask Elvis" and maybe a few journal entries and such. I thought that last year's site activity was pretty good, ...

Elvis' b-sides are the best. The Rhino reissues are seeing to it that there are fewer and fewer actual "rarities" though, so I'll limit myself to things that are still "rare." The Bridge I Burned (pop lie remix)-- this was only released on the really obscure promo EP put out arou...

Re: Question for anyone with new reissues

The version of "Temptation" is not the "Idle Hands" version, and "Baby Pictures" is an odd, fast paced version. EC notes that it was supposed to be played as a ballad, but for some reason they recorded it in the style of old "music hall" songs, to the song's d...
