I've been thinking a lot lately about the musicians from my country who have made a contribution to music. Set aside all the Bryan Adamses, all the Alanis Morrisettes, and all the Celine Dions, and you still have a solid bunch of contributors. But who is the best?

I know very little about The Pogues, but I recall Cait singing "I'm A Man You Don't Meet Every Day" from Rum, Sodomy, and The Lash.

Apparently there is also a film Greendale which will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. I think I'll check it out.

Here's one for ya... Canadian kid (BlueChair) goes to England to study for a year, discovers that he loves a Canadian woman's music who he simply couldn't connect with before.

The album that did me in was Hejira. What a beautiful record by a Canadian woman that will forever remind me of England.

The Rolling Stones & Friends on July 30th, and hopefully the Toronto Star Blues Festival in a few weeks (Richard Thompson, John Hiatt, Big Bill Morganfield, Robert Cray, etc.).

Clarence White of The Byrds offered some amazing lead guitar work in the late 60's early 70's. His guitar playing sounded like bluegrass on a distorted electric guitar. Some of the live stuff in particular is just amazing.

John Hiatt and Robert Cray (along with Richard Thompson, George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Sheryl Crow, and Blind Boys Of Alabama) are playing at a multi-day blues festival here in Toronto. I should really go.

I'd just wait the extra couple of weeks for it to get released in North America....

haha.. there's a Steve's Music here in Toronto, but I guess he was at the one in Montreal. Buncha pricks, they are.. but would have been cool to go to a music shop and see Steve trying out keyboard.

It doesn't bother me too much. Take a song like "Girl From The North Country"... that's basically a rewrite of the traditional song "Scarborough Fair." Quoting a book in a song should be allowed, though Dylan should have given the guy proper credit.
