Eh? I don't get what your issue is, fellas. The intention is to parody 1950s comics/cheap novels, so surely they've more than succeeded in their aim?

Re: New single “Newspaper Pane”, October 16, 2020

This one kind of floats past - it feels like a mood, rather than a melody - a very down, depressed mood. It's like 'We're All Cowards Now' in that regard. One of Elvis's strengths for me has been his gift for really catchy melodies, but I think he's aiming for something different in these songs.

Matthew McManus?

Anyone know if this is the son of Elvis? Probably not - I presume he was in his 40s in 2012 when this clip was uploaded: https://youtu.be/Rb7yD-dQw_Y - and this guy looks to be in his 20s.

Jardine, this one's for you!

Sulky, happy to give the falsetto a whirl, though it'll probably clear the pub.

Re: "Shut Him Down" - single by Michael Leonhart Orchestra, Elvis Costello & JSWISS

This sounds great, apart from there's something about the lyrics and pitch that make them hard to make out.

Does anyone else expect Elvis suddenly to burst out:

"Because I'm baaad
I'm bad
Ya know it
Because I'm baaad
I'm bad
Ya know it "

Hi MOOT - yes, I know this clip well. I find it a bit laid back, not a tight performance, and Elvis looks bored singing it. Still, always great to see the young Attractions. We were all thin once!

I now LOVE this song! On first listen his voice struck me as ragged. But now that I'm used to the song, I don't even notice it, and think it all sounds great. It's such a great, old-fashioned melody and the playing from everyone and the production are fantastic. How about that piano sound? How about...

Re: New song “Hey Clockface / How Can You Face Me’, sept 11, 2020

Agreed Elvis's voice is showing signs of age now, but there's nothing anyone can do about that - it happens to everyone (apart from Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey - not saying that cos they come from The Land of Song, it just seems that their voices refuse to lose their power). I think this song is en...

Re: Blood and Chocolate Survivor - Results

Well it is a great song. And I'm glad 'I Want You' didn't win. I don't hate 'I Want You' - it's an entirely successful song at what Elvis was trying to do - it's amazing. But I just can't bear to listen to such a negative, sinister song very often. At least 'I Hope You're Happy Now' has humour in th...

Re: Blood and Chocolate Survivor - Final Round

Now it can be told - I would have been happy for any of these to have been top: Blue Chair Next Time Round Crimes of Paris They are just so incredibly melodic, poppy and joyous, undercut by the dark lyrics. I heart them. The verses pull you in, the choruses are INCREDIBLE and the middle eights are o...

Also LOVE:

'You tore him out and screwed him up, like a bad page in a naughty picture book.'

Love the imagery, and also how Elvis dares to break the scansion and pulls it off with success, making it an even better song!

Re: Blood and Chocolate Survivor - Round 8

It had to go eventually, but it's such a brilliant, brilliant song. I always see this as Elvis's view of his songwriting persona - taking the mickey out of his twisted love songs. But is anyone listening any more, he wonders: "The world has wiped its mouth since then - or maybe it was yawning.&...

A great album opener, definitely. Love it, and I haven't voted it out yet. Re: Blood and Chocolate Survivor - Round 5

It is a fantastic song. Some of the lyrics are astoundingly pictorial. The 'Disney abbatoir' can only be Mickey Mouse, Donald and Pluto chopped into bits. Waaaaaaaht? The black sand stuck beneath her feet in a warm Sorrento sunrise is so beautifully scanned. 'They say gold paint on the palace gates ...
