Re: A Case for Song: Tart
Classic Costello in my ears: elegant melody, bitter words, vocabulary that rises above the usual pop-music lingo ...
If I'm not careful I might even let this one make my personal top 10!
Seriously, one of my favorites.

I'm sure it's meant to be a cynical statement by EC or something, but he's sure putting a whole lot of legs, thighs and push up bras on stage these days.
What's the difference between EC and a dirty old man? A raised eyebrow?

the sound of his lyrics + a vocal deliverance style that is barely better than mine
also: the abundance of music: so many albums, so many B-sides, so many outtakes!

This is funny: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Return-Spectacular-Spinning-Songbook/dp/B006ISJPXG/ref=pd_cp_m_h__0 It's the new edition, I suppose; but if your read the details + the reviews, they're all talking about the horribly expensive deluxe version, including the lavish book etc. So, if you want to h...

Re: don't bother me
I saw a video of him doing Slow Drag With Josephine on Jools Holland -- that was muh better. Some excellent singing and very confident and expressive guitar picking (accompanied by just a stand-up bass). Well-impressed with that.
He must have been really nervous doing that on National TV.

Re: don't bother me
While I'm impressed (this is much better than what we usually get from the man), you still see him struggling: hesitant fingering and awkward jumps. Worst of all, he's visibly paying all his attention to the strings, letting his vocals wonder off. He's straying into musical territory that don't show...

In any case, Elvis Costello must enjoy the controversy around all this, otherwise he wouldn't have thrown petrol on the fire.
It's an ugly situation that is being dealt with in an even uglier way.

And therefore, if MP3s have no intrinsic value, shouldn't they be free anyway?
Would you download if the artist offered mp3s legally for free?

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.
How about if you bought a legal download of an album (and gave the arists and their record company their share), grow tired of it and then decide to sell the mp3? Or can you never have legitimate ownership over an mp3? Well, that's murkier because of the intangibility of the format. There's nothing...

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.
What about buying a second hand LP? Is that legal? Of course. Presumably, the LP was originally paid for at a record store, with profits going back to the artist and label, then when the owner of the LP grew tired with the album, decided to sell it, which was perfectly within his moral and legal ri...

Re: 'The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook', Nov.
He's not releasing the album - the record label is. Yes, but the artist is providing the recordings, which he can always withdraw. It might cost him a lot of money to do so (depending on the nature of his contract), but he should be able to. It's hard to imagine that an artist like ELvis Costello w...

Costello should eb able to cancel this release. It would cost him a bit of money, but he's not that poor. I he lets it come out at this enfalted price + tehn complains about it on his site (to save face with his fans?) ... teh well-known phrase 'full-time hypocrite' springs to mind :? Anyway, i wasn...

I can supply about 500 Prince versions of that song
But I didn't even know Elvis had a go at it? Where? When?
Love to hear it too.
Then again ... Elvis doing Prince usually sounds ... atrocious

Re: Best and worst SOUNDING albums?
National Ransom sounds pretty bad to me ... Initially I thought it was a dodgy mp3 collection. But then I bought the vinyl .. the same ...; I bought the CD ... the same ... some really sloppy mixing with distorting and clashing sound levels (e.g. the rhythm guitar in the title track is an ugly blob)...

There's now way we can change endlessmind's mind :D 'Pump It Up' is a straight copy of Dylan's 'Subterranean Home-sick Blues' --- do we have to lead the Prince song back to that? I seriously doubt it Prince listens to Elvis Costello music. But you never know ... Elvis covering Prince is cringe-worth...

Re: New Prince song rips EC more than a little
As a big fan of both artists, I would say: absolutely not. Both songs have semi-shouted, semi-sung verses, but the list of songs that do that is endless! And they both are expressions, in very different ways, of the way these two artists write their songs. Really, I can't get over the idea that you ...
